CHAPTER 6

Another seven days of watchful waiting in the fairy realm had me wound tighter than a drum. I looked around every corner for my mother's evil hand at work, inspected everything we ate with the help of a younger fairy as our taster. And all while trying to pay attention to lessons and Alanna's million and one questions.

She asked about spells, history, clothes, and got herself a gorgeous new wardrobe that really picked up her purplish eyes and wings, but of our coming lovemaking, not a word.

I took her silence as acceptance and understanding. In that, I was to be sadly mistaken.

As she and I walked side by side to the Ascension chamber, my grandparents leading the way, the guards following behind, I swallowed down my nervousness. We had made love dozens of times at this point, as fairy and human. Wolf would have to wait until the next full moon, for while she could turn at will, I couldn't. At least not without training from Michael and Artem.

But the strong wolf instinct to be with my mate coursed through my veins despite the less than ideal circumstances. It would be fine. I just had to do my best and hope it was enough.

We'd talked about children at the start, when I'd asked her what her perfect life looked like in the next ten years. We'd both agreed we looked forward to becoming parents, though this would be on a much shorter timetable than we had imagined.

But if she had any reservations, she kept them well-hidden, for she said nothing, and I couldn't hear any qualms in her mind either. In fact, now each time the subject was mentioned, she sounded happier about it. At peace. And actually quite looking forward to it.

I LOVED her. I wanted only what was best for her. As with a human virgin, one pain would be the gateway to a lifetime of pleasure.

"Just remember, no matter what, don't push away or break the connection. I don't want you to fall. And we're going to do it with your legs straight when we rise. If it's difficult to hold on, try to stand on the tops of my feet."

"Like a child learning how to dance for the first time."

"Exactly, my love. Except we've done this dance before, and it's older than time. It's my love for you taking physical form. I hope you know there's never been a time when I've viewed what we share as tawdry, sleazy, just fun, a good time. There's always been love, that's just deepened with each passing minute."

"I know. It's the same for me."

"So, nothing to be ashamed of. I told all my friends about you back home in Montana, didn't I?"

"Um, well, yes."

"So it will be no secret to my family or dynasty how much I love you now."

She nodded, and kissed me. "Exactly. Secrets are what destroys relationships, not honest mistakes or accidents."

"I'm glad you can see that."

My grandparents took our garments from us, led us into the room, looked around to make sure we had all we needed, and departed.
